Lonergan Studio Student Recital

What is it?
We are fortunate to be able to hold our annual recital at Kerrytown Recital Hall in the spring of each year. It is a formal event with the finest piano and professional accompanist, as well as all the other features of a live concert performance. Performing is an important part of learning to play an instrument, and preparing for this event gives students a chance to experience the process and to realize the gratification of showing off a year’s worth of work.

Who performs?
All students participate, regardless of experience or ability, including beginners having studied at least one semester, since the purpose of our recital is to show the students’ work. The audience is the friendliest one might find, and is especially supportive, given that most everyone has “been there” whether as a student performer or family support person!

When is it?
The recital date is scheduled in advance on a Sunday morning (because of limited hall availability and greater rental expense at other times) and begins at 11:00 am. The date is always listed on the yearly calendar published each August. Students are requested to arrive early on recital day for preparations. Guests are welcome, however, space is limited. An outdoor reception follows, and each family is requested to bring a treat to share.

Dress Rehearsal?
Dress rehearsals will be scheduled on Thursday of the recital week, at 15-minute increments from 3-8pm. There will be no regular lesson on your usual day/time during the week preceding the recital, since this week is reserved for preparations and a pre-scheduled dress rehearsal with the accompanist. The Dress Rehearsal location is usually a local church, to be announced. A rehearsal sign-up sheet will be available two weeks in advance. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to your rehearsal, and unpack and get ready to play as soon as you arrive.

What are the costs?
Families are requested to help cover some costs, including the reception and the rental of the hall ($20/student) and the accompanist ($40/student). Some years there may be an optional field trip following the recital at additional expense for participants (a UMS or Detroit Symphony concert, for example).

What do I need to do?
Besides preparing for your performance, students should sign up in advance for a dress rehearsal slot, pay recital fees, arrive on time to the dress rehearsal, provide a short performer biography, wear dress clothes and shoes on the recital day (suit & tie not necessary), arrive on time to the recital, bring a plate of goodies to share, read and carefully follow the recital day instructions provided, and – above all - enjoy the day! Watch for a detailed instruction sheet before the dress rehearsal, and another instruction sheet for the recital day itself.
